The Approach
There are many attempts at ranking states' relative performance on various factors. Healthy, Wealthy, Smart & Safe is the first to examine the question of the relative value delivered by each state government. We do this by taking a comprehensive view of state spending, and balancing that against a wide range of outcomes over 20+ years.

I am an entrepreneur and community leader who has always had a penchant for comparative analysis - political or otherwise. Most recently I founded and sold a generative AI business, and I had previous stops at McKinsey's global healthcare practice, General Electric before Immelt destroyed it, and a couple of heavy manufacturing firms. I am an entrepreneur and community leader who has always had a penchant for comparative analysis - political or otherwise. Most recently I founded and sold a generative AI business, and I had previous stops at McKinsey's global healthcare practice, General Electric before Immelt destroyed it, and a couple of heavy manufacturing firms. Pre-MBA, I started my career with the Defense Intelligence Agency and as a contractor for the CIA, where I built some of the agency's first pilots for the systematic exploitation of open source intelligence (OSINT).
Two of my notable community efforts include being cofounder of a citizen group that was the first in the country to stop the Federal Aviation Administration's deployment of NextGen flight paths. The analytical foundation of that effort was a FOIA for gigabytes of data from the FAA, and the creation of Noise Exposure Maps for the 30 largest airports in the country that exposed their scheme to avoid accountability.
And flowing out of my initial research for HWSS, I cofounded the research-based non-profit, Start Reading Now, which serves thousands of kids each year with no permanent, full-time staff.
I have a BA in German and Political Science (from the University of Nebraska, Phi Beta Kappa), further MA studies (ABT) in Political Science (Illinois), and an MBA (Minnesota).
